DOPPELGANGERS
>> 2.02.2010
The trend for the past week on Facebook has been to find your famous doppelganger and make it your profile photo, so of course, not being in Paris, I went on my mission.
I've decided that no one actually really looks like their supposed "doppelganger," they just have a yearning to resemble that person like whoa. And I have no problem with that. But just know, you DON'T look like Jessica Alba, Adriana Lima, or Jennifer Lopez. You just don't. Okay, with that over, I've decided that I want to look like...
EDIE SEDGWICK. Yes, indeed. I love her. Everything about her- and she got to hang around Andy Warhol quite a bit. I think that her life was completely fascinating, even though she got overly involved in drugs and ultimately died from addictions. Anyway, she was beautiful, and even thought I don't really look anything like her, I like to think that our spirits are alike in some way, shape, or form. And here's some photos of Edie to look at.
LE WEEK-END
>> 2.01.2010
So, again, I was without wireless internet, but I had an AMAZING weekend with some of the most fantastic people that I have ever met. The story can begin:
So, as of a week ago, Chamone told me that she was coming to Paris. I found a really really cheap train ticket (15 Euro, holy cow), and set off on my way to Paris. Oh, and I was in first class. Perfect. I arrived in the Gare de Nord at about 17h30, and tried to find Chamone and her friends from London, but the phone numbers that she gave me weren't working and I was completely lost. Thank god I GoogleMapped their apartment, because I ended up just going there and waiting. Finally, I got a hold of them on the phone and they let me know that they were completely lost, waiting at the Louvre. I lugged my suitcase back onto the Metro and met them at Louvre-Rivoli. They seemed a bit frazzled, and one of the girls, Chelsea, was freaking out about how scared she was of the city. Eventually, we found the Hotel and got to relax a little bit.
The two girls who were with Chamone, Heather and Chelsea, decided that they were going to spend the next day at Versailles, but Chamone and I had other plans. At this point, all of the girls had decided that they HATED Paris, and that it was just dirty and scary. Of course, I took it upon myself to enlighten them about the amazing things here and why I absolutely LOVE it here. I decided to take Chamone on a walking tour of my city the next morning. We all plopped down on the oddly placed beds and slept.
At about 9h00, we woke up and I helped the other two girls map out the Metro- which I have become surprisingly good at- to Versailles. We sent them on their way and Chamone and I left for Place de Volataire, my home base.
I took her to my favorite Boulangerie, the one I speak of all the time on my blog, and I bought her some freshly baked croissants and a pan au chocolate. Let's just say that she couldn't speak for a good 5 minutes. It was so nice. After that, I took her shopping by Rivoli and we dipped back into the hotel for a few minutes. I made sure to walk her around the old Paris, and of course to the Notre Dame. It is so incredible at night; they light the building from the bottom so you can really see the detail. It was breathtaking.. We went a few more places and then headed home. Oh, she fell in love. SUCCESS!
I decided to take the girls out to this club that I really enjoy- Le Globo. You might have read about my travels there on this blog before. We got ready, decided to buy some wine pre-hand, and went out dancing all night. We returned at about 7h30, and just passed out on the beds.
The next morning was a bit hectic. We woke up late, had to shovel all of our things into the bags and leave in 10 minutes, and believe me, none of us were in the right shape to be moving so quickly. I had to rush Chelsea to her train that was leaving in 20 minutes- that was scary- and then after that, I was charged with taking Heather and Chamone to the Eiffel Tower. Kill me. I seriously hate going there.
We dragged our luggage to the Tower, took some pictures, and left. We found some croissants too. After that, we returned to the Notre Dame, and then I took the girls to CDG, so they could catch their flight back to London. I bought myself a train ticket to Lille, and headed back to N. En Ferrain. I am going back to Paris in a week, so I found it necessary to make it back 'home.'
Loved it. Hectic, but so much fun. And getting to see one of my best friends in my new home town was pretty mind blowing. Here's some photos.

NE ME QUITTE PAS
>> 1.29.2010
Again, sorry for the hiatus. I was in Roubaix once again, and without internet. I also forgot my outlet adapter at a friend's house, so I wasn't able to charge my laptop- apparently, I had to buy another one.
Roubaix was again fantastic. I got to go to Melrose's school again, which was nice. It's called ESAAT. I am very excited today because I get to return to Paris! I am going to see Chamone today at 4:30!! I can't wait. Other than that, I've spent my morning packing. It's so odd, I feel like Mathilde's is my home. When I returned from Roubaix, I got that warm feeling like I was somewhere I belonged. Ahh. The next best thing to sleeping in my own bed in Alaska.
I fell in love with Jaques Brel. Here's a link. Dear lord, he is amazing.
I'M A LEAF THAT KEEPS ON FALLING
So I think that I am returning to Roubaix today at some point. It's really nice to be in a place like Neuville en Ferrain because it is really close to both Lille and Roubaix- only about a 30 minute Metro ride. I love having friends here! It makes my life a little bit more interesting. Last night I began reading Romeo & Juliet in French, and it has proven to be extremely difficult. It's hard enough to understand in English, however it is definitely a little bit more fun to read in French. :)
Mathilde got super sick yesterday with the flu and I am terrified that I might catch it, damn weak immune system. She just got a job and so I am alone more and more often. I am excited though, because a really good friend of mine, Chamone, is going to school in London and she is coming into Paris for the weekend! It gives me a good excuse to leave here for my love, Paris, and have some fun! I can't wait.
I wish I would have brought more clothes. I have NOTHING to wear that is cute, and in Paris, it's all about looking like a million dollars all the time. I don't even have a blow dryer or a straightener! What is wrong with me?!? I'm sure that I'll figure something out. but for now, I am scrubbing it. I have no money for clothes or anything, so we'll see. Maybe I can con Chamone into giving me some cute things, she has just about everything, and I am sure she brought about 15 suitcases with her to London.
Other than that, I am just hanging out at the house. This place is absolutely gorgeous. I have come to really enjoy the outdoors here. It's just so rainy, and green. And the brick is just amazing. I can understand why people live here. The only problem with this area is that there is honestly nothing to really do. There are no clubs or bars or restaurants. Just pharmacies and places like that. And the Metro is a good 25 minute walk from Mathilde's house. It's a fun little adventure everyday.
Alright. Well, when I get more information on my Paris plans, I'll fill you all in!
Love you all.

I want to put a layout onto my blog, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. It's killing me because I am usually very good at this. HTML, that is. Ugh. If someone knows how to do it, I have a downloaded skin and images- I would LOVE you if you could teach me via SKYPE or something, like my email. I don't know. I can't even figure it out using like online references. This is so annoying. Someone help me!!

Today I went on a really long walk, and I found the local cemetery- of course I had to wander in. It was very beautiful, much more quaint than Pere Lachaise, but still wonderful. I found a cat lurking in the grounds, and he came up to me and said hello. I am convinced that it was really someone who had died. The cat kept rubbing up against this one headstone; it just might have been his. After that, I went with Mathilde and her friend Emmanuel to... Belgium! It was pretty odd, lots of really strange clothing stores and huge tobacco shops. They also love their fries there. We only stayed for about an hour because they were shopping. It was alright, but it didn't blow my mind.
I went on another walk when I got home, but it's really cold today, so my walk was pretty short. I don't think that I am going to do anything tonight, but here are some pictures for the day. The house in the first picture is Mathilde's. Really nice!

So this afternoon I went on a few walks in the rain- really enjoyable. It's peaceful, I think, walking in the rain, especially here. It's all just brick houses and fields. It's almost like watching a movie, the people are so friendly, saying hello in the streets and such. Now, I am eating some dinner alone in the kitchen because there is apparently this huge music award show tonight. Mathilde's sister has about 10 friends over- and they are all around 14... Think about it.
I am enjoying my salad and tea. It's so nice not to be eating pasta, bread, or cheese at the moment. I think that my stomach just might explode soon from the starch and fat. Blah. I'm drinking a ton of water here because the tap is actually clean, unlike Paris, which is good. I have nothing exciting to say right now, I feel bad. I think I might go on another rain-walk, I enjoy them.
I'll be in touch!
Gros bisoux.
Neuville en Ferrain- Roubaix
I got to go to Melrose's school, ESAAT- nations unies! It was really interesting. I met him there after school was out and he let me come into the studio and paint. We took turns posing and did 10 minute sketches for about 2 hours. I wish I could have taken some pictures of some of the paintings that we did! They were pretty cool, just pencil and red and blue watercolor. Now I really want to take some art classes- I can't even imagine going to school for art, it just be too fun.
After that, we kind of just hung around his apartment, and I wandered the city a little bit. Roubaix is really just city with a mall in the middle of it, so there wasn't much to do. I got a really good coffee at this little cafe by the Gare de Roubaix, which was nice. The owners came out to meet me because they heard my accent, and they were very surprised to hear that I hail from Alaska! It's funny to watch people when they say, "ALASKA? Non!!" It's a nice little pick-me-up.
So, after two days in Roubaix, I am now back in Neuville en Ferrain, at Mathilde's house. I made an egg sandwich and maitenant, je suis rempli! I am charging my camera finally, so I promise that I will make up for my lack of photo-posting this week. I have to go on more walks and find interesting things to photograph. For now, here's a few!

MY NEW PLAN!
>> 1.21.2010
Seeing how I have a love affair with Paris, I've decided this:
I am going to double major in French and English. After grauating fro undergraduate school, I am going to come back and attend AUP- American University of Paris- for graduate school. After that, I am just going to stay here and teach English, buy a tiny apartment, and live happily ever after.
Sounds good, no?
What's happened to me?
So, the internet where I am staying was faulty last night, sorry for the lack of post. I am now packing some things for my overnight trip to Roubaix. I came to Lille this morning with Mathilde- she went to school, I browsed the stores, like usual. Seeing how I had to throw away my FAVORITE boots, I picked up a pair of really cute heels from H&M.
And so the story goes. My legs have been hurting for some reason for the past couple of weeks, and today, the epitome of pain. I put these shoes on and started to walk. At first, my legs were fine; they miss wearing heels. And then, to my surprise, pain started shooting up my legs. WHY???! Why do you choose to cause me pain, heels? And now, after hobbling a few blocks, I am sitting in Gare de Lille Flandres, waiting for my legs to not hurt anymore. I am literally afraid to walk. I don't know what's going on with me. I have another 2 hours until I need to get on the Metro, and I think I might just sit here the entire time. I am embarassed to walk because my feet turn in and I look like I am going to fall over.
I always made fun of people who couldn't walk in heels, and now I am one of them... I am so sorry. I think that this just might be what people call, "KARMA." I hate this. I know this has just been a rant, but it's killing me.
Other than that, I am not doing anything of importance. There's supposedly this really interesting museum in Roubaix that used to be an old pool- I think I might go see that tomorrow. Wait for pictures though, because I forgot my USB cord at Mathilde's house. Oh! I got to meet their housecleaner, Corrine, who talked my ear off. She has a really strange accent, so it was really difficult for me to talk to her/ understand her. It was fun though.. Okay.
I have nothing else to say, but I am afraid of looking like a creeper at the train station, just staring at my laptop. I'll be in contact soon, I promise. Love, love, love.
Un jour tranquille.
>> 1.19.2010
Today has been a quiet day. Mathilde and her family are all off at work or school, and I am staying in the house. I read quite a bit of Baudelaire's prose- it takes me forever to translate it! As of right now, I am sitting in their kitchen listening to classical music, waiting for my coffee to brew. I went on a run this morning in the rain, which was really nice.
I am headed off to Roubaix on Thursday after a day at Mathilde's school. Her professor wants me to speak to her English class about what I've found odd or surprising about the French or France in general. I am a little bit scared because I am supposed to be speaking in French- that's really hard for me, I get timid when I have to speak in French.. We'll see how that goes. I am, however, really excited to get to meet new people in Roubaix.
I still miss Paris. I'll post some pictures of the house that I am staying in a bit later.
With love.
Sorry!
>> 1.18.2010
Hiatus, I know. I'm sorry that I haven't written, I've been actually travelling. As some of you now know, I arrived in Lille just yesterday, and I've been fighting to find wireless internet everywhere. I am actually staying with a friend of mine, Mathilde, in Neuville de Ferrain. It's a smaller city on the outskirts of Lille.
She has school everyday, so I came with her into Lille today, and I've been spending my day in and out of cafes, fighting the cold, and searching for WIFI. Ugh. I have a ton of photos to upload, but I don't have my cord, so expect some Lill-ian pictures later.
And, I miss Paris. I am so in LOVE with that city. I miss it so much. There's just something so magical about that place, and I feel a void forming in my heart. Another thing that is bothering me is that all of a sudden, I've started gaining weight. I lost a few pounds when I first arrived in Paris, but now it's starting to catch up to me. No more bread or cheese. Now I am going to survive on cafe alone, because it is now the only thing that I can afford. All of the cheap food is like, Nutella Paninni, Pan au Chocolat, Croissant, etc. and it kills me. Everything here is very expensive, and when I start to convert the prices into USD, I want to cry. I am getting to be so broke, I hate it. And all of the clothes here are to die for. KDJHALKJAD. Frustration.
I am hoping to see a friend of mine sometime this week who lives in Roubaix, an even smaller city by Lille. He attends an art school there, and it would be nice to see a familiar face.
Family, I miss you. Mom, come to France soon so that I can go back to Paris- I miss it already and it's only been one day. I don't even care about going to Italy now... Let's just stay in Paris, okay? You'll like it better, I swear. I think I'm going to move there sometime in the next few years. I'll just practice y French and attend college here. It's really really cheap. Better than the 40,000 USD here.
A bientot. Read more...
Le Globo
>> 1.16.2010
Sorry for the late post, but I had an amazing night last night! I got to go to this really popular club called Le Globo because it was technically my last night in Paris. I am leaving tomorrow morning for Lille at 9 AM. It’s bittersweet because I would love to remain in Paris for the entirety of my trip, but it’s not financially feasible. Anyway, this club- AWESOME. I’ve discovered something about Paris; nothing is as it seems. We pulled up to this club, and the outside of the place was decrepit and ugly, with a small line, and I was super disappointed. But then, after we made it past the bouncers, down the 3 flights of stairs, and through 3 doors, I saw the dance floor. Oh my god. So many people, ALL dancing. It was fantastic. I am in love with this place.
We ended up dancing all night, finally leaving at 7 AM, and that’s why I am not headed to Lille today. The last train was at 9 this morning, and I wouldn’t have made it. I’ll fill you all in on my Lille adventures as soon as they occur, and I am sure they will. I’ve become quite the adventure-seeker. Lots of love, I miss you all.
Sacre Coeur
>> 1.15.2010
Yesterday I travelled to Monparnasse and I got to see Sacre Coeur at night! I have to say, it’s absolutely breathtaking. You can see it in the photos below. As I stood on this balcony five stories up, I could look to my left and see what the past has given us- Sacre Coeur, and to my right I could see what the future holds for us, Monparnasse, with cranes everywhere and skyscrapers littering the skyline. It was really inspiring, but I felt a tinge of regret. We have no art today like the art of yesterday, no marble statues or glittering cathedrals, and it saddens me.
After that, we took the Metro back to Place de Voltaire and we began a great French film called Prophet. I am sure that it will be a contender for the Academy Awards. That film is still on my mind- so powerful.
This morning, I made some really good poached eggs on croissants, but as I was cleaning up, I sliced my finger pretty badly, so I’ve been nursing that for most of the morning. It’s funny how little you can do when you are without a pinky! I’m sure I’ll get out today, but I can’t spend any money anymore. I am absolutely broke- for now!
Oh, and I hope everyone got a kick out of the “Obama Phone” seen below. It’s hilarious. “YES WE CAN- have a cellular phone in Paris.” Love it.
A tout suite.

>> 1.13.2010
Today I went back to the Latin Quarter and I walked around on some really popular streets. I didn't do any shopping to my surprise, but I did see a ton of really cool urban graphic art. I took a ton of photos and people watched for most of the day. I got to see Notre Dame again, amzing as usual. It's so fascinating that structures like that are actually built by people. not by angels. Notre Dame is breathtaking. There are saints carved into the front of the building and the gargoyles are to die for. Amazing.. I just bought some delicious cheeses (St. Felicien!! Someone try this cheese, it's unbelievable) and two baguettes, about to eat some dinner! Love you all, thanks for following my travels. I'll post again soon.

New Jersey?
>> 1.12.2010
If you don't know already, the people that I am staying with produce documentaries, and right now they are working on this one about an adult named Mike, who has muscular dystrophy and uses medical marijuana. Today, New Jersey passed legislation allowing medical marijuana plants to be established in the state, so there's been a lot of stress for us this morning. They are trying to figure out how much money they should cut for him, but it keeps going up because he is becoming more and more famous for his speeches for the use of medical marijuana. Ugh. Stress!!
So today is a day for work.
I am going to go by my Eurail pass at some point today, but I don't have any other pertinent plans. I want to go see Sacre Coeur, but today just doesn't seem like the day to do it. I'll post again later if and when I do something interesting- I am sure that I will, but probably later in the day. Well, congratulations to Mike and New Jersey- enjoy your pot.
Lost in Translation
>> 1.11.2010
So, today was a bit uneventful. I spent the latter part of my day in and out of cafes people-watching. I had an amazing cafe esspresso, by far the best I've had since I arrived.. I've started translating some Rimbaud and Baudelaire, but it's going slowly. I bought a french-english dictionary (FINALLY!) and it's quite a help. Anyway, I am going to go grab a crepe, seeing how I haven't eaten one yet, and I am craving something sweet. Sorry for the short post!
A tout suite.
