RODIN/ROMA

>> 2.27.2010

Went to the Musee Rodin a few days ago with Mom, and it was fabulous- tons of great sculptures and paintings. There was an exposition on Rodin and Matisse, and it was interesting to get to see the similarities in their works. We got caught in the pouring rain while we were looking at the Gates of Hell, and ducked into a great little cafe for some coffees.
The next day was bittersweet. We said goodbye to our little apartment on Rue Voltaire and caught the night train to Milan. After 6 plus hours on a cramped, awful night train, we hopped on the next train to ROMA! So now, we are spending a few days here and then we will be off to Venice.
Today we went and walked through the Colosseum and after that, just wandered about the town. Its so nice here, about 60 degrees. Much warmer than my 25-30 degree Paris, but I already miss that city.
I leave for Alaska now in 8 days and I am feeling a bit sad, hopefully that will pass. I have a new school plan that will allow me to come back to Paris very very soon. :)
Love you all, pictures soon.

SO, AFTER TWO WEEKS...

>> 2.24.2010

Guilt. I am truly sorry for not posting. Everyone has really been on my case for not writing! I have been doing some pretty incredible things lately, and my MOM is here now! How exciting! So to fill everyone in, here are some of the highlights of what we have been doing:

The Louvre- I was sadly a little bit reluctant to go; as of lately, I have been really turned off by museums, and I have to say, I was blown away. The sheer amount of art they have there is unbelievable. Of course, my favorite things were the Greek sculptures. Here's a photo of my favorite one.

Winged Victory. Ridiculous. And Mom's favorites were the Egyptian Antiquities. They were cool as well. After about 4 hours of walking through that museum, I was so sick of stairs.
L'Orangeries- A HUGE collection of Monet's waterlilies. The museum, located right across from the Gardens and the Concord, was shaped and lit JUST for his works. The paintings stretched around the room and it was beautiful. I wish I had more photos! Oh! I lost my camera cord at Lorenzo's apartment, so I no longer have a camera to take pictures with. I am quite heartbroken. As soon as I find another cord, I will be sure to post photos en masse for everyone. I promise. Here's a great shot of some of Monet's waterlilies.

Versailles: OVERLY Gaudy. I don't even know how the French allowed Louis XIV to live as long as they did. He reigned for over 70 years and he spent more than 1 year's worth of France's GDP on redo-ing his home. It was amazing to see how lavish the monarch was and also how conceited Louis XIV- The Sun King- was. He thought he was second in command only to God. There is actually a photo in one of the chambers that depicts a party at Versailles, and Jesus is sitting at one of the tables enjoying his time with the King. Haha! Incredible. After walking through the Chateau, Mom and I walked around the city and it was absolutely beautiful. We bought some deliciously adorable Macaroons and ate them at a wonderful quaint cafe. After that, we went and got dinner at a great restaurant called "Le Tire Bouchon." I had some of the best fish I had ever tasted in my life, and Mom got duck breast with this cherry sauce that looked divine. A great day.
Catacombs:  Sadly enough, I think this is my favorite tourist-y thing that I have done since I arrived in Paris. It is a huge collection of bones and skulls built up into walls under a quarry located in the Monparnasse Cimitere. I just might be the Queen of Macabre. I love Pere Lachaise and the Catacombs. Who am I? It was really interesting. Of course, as we were walking though, my mother could only muse on how great of a Halloween party she could throw in there. I am thinking of renaming her "Martha," because she can only seem to think of Martha Stewart-y Halloween schemes whenever we walk through the graveyards. So crazy.

MELCHOIR BELSON-

>> 2.14.2010

Faubourg Saint Denis
envoyé par Narfouette. - Regardez plus de films, séries et bandes annonces.

And as most of you know, I have a mild obsession with everything Paris, and that includes the film Paris, je t'aime. Last night, something amazing happened. I ACTUALLY MET MELCHOIR BELSON ON THE STREET!
I was walking with Melrose and his friend Eloise back to the apartment on Place Voltaire, and all of a sudden I looked up and saw a blind man with a cane. There was people everywhere and he was kind of budging through, so of course I made eye contact and then realized that it was him! He acts in the short Faubourg Saint Denis by Tom Twyker against Natalie Portman in Paris, je t'aime.  I wanted to hug him, but that might have been weird.
I was amazed that he was actually blind! But yes, I just had to share my excitement about meeting him. And it's my favorite short out of the 18, so that was even more exciting!
     Love.

HIATUS, PART DEUX

>> 2.13.2010

Ah, it’s been a while now, and I am sorry. I have been so busy doing all kinds of things! So as my update, I will let you know that I left from Neuville-En-Ferrain a week ago and I have been CouchSurfing in Paris- finally. I had always planned on trying that site out, and I am happy to inform tout le monde that it works really well! I was very happy with the two people who allowed me to stay with them. They were both really generous.
As of lately, I have been working on the documentary with Lorenzo and Jerome. It’s rewarding for me because I am helping them write the subtitles and so I get to see the translations from English to French. I am happy to say that my French has improved DRAMATICALLY. My language has gotten to the point that I can go out and meet people and actually hold conversations. I didn’t think that I would improve so much. However, I am a little bit afraid that when I return to Alaska, I will lose my french. I suppose that I will just have to keep in constant contact with the people that I have met in Paris.
Other than that, I have been hanging out with my new friends quite a bit. We go dancing at really interesting clubs like Oz Bar and Le Globo, so I have fun all the time- it’s the dancer in me. Oh, and Melrose bought a video projector, so we’ve been having film nights at his friend Bouba’s apartment.
My mom comes in 5 days! I am so excited to see her. I have to say, as much as I love Paris, I really miss home. And Alivia is back in Alaska. I can’t wait to come home. I need to have a regular schedule again. I miss being able to go to the gym and I also miss working. How odd. I miss working? Who am I?
One good thing that has come from my trip is that I’ve written about 45 pages of stories. No joke. I have just been so inspired here. The people, the food, the culture, and the clubs have all influenced me more than I thought. I am going to be a changed person when I come back to Alaska! My style has definitely changed as well. And I’ve gotten fat. Haha! Can’t wait for the gym.
Also, to let everyone know, I’m starting a new blog, and that is why I haven’t been so active on Voltaire No 6. It’s a blog dedicated to reviews on restaurants, shows, movies, music, and fashion, and it’s been taking up a ton of my time. But I’ve gone to so many amazing places here, that I just HAVE to start this. I actually have been getting into a few places for free so that I can interview the owners and take photos. It’s really interesting. I finally feel like my inner journalist is coming out. I bought a cheap audio recorder, and it’s my new best friend. So watch out for my new blog- it’s called BEAUBEAUX. Coming soon.
I’ll be sure to be a little more active; I know that some of you have been anxious to see what I’ve been up to (my family). Lots of love, and I will be in contact soon! Promise.
Post Script- I can’t find my adaptor for my camera so I will post a large group of photos as soon as I find it! Keep an eye out.
